Lot Essay

In this fascinating variation on the capping breech-loader, the cartridge has to be loaded into the chambers powder end first. Sadly, many shooters forgot to make this mental adjustment and the design did not become widely accepted. It was, however, adopted by the United States Government as a means to convert 2,000 muzzle-loading muskets and rifles in 1858 and it found favour among certain English sporting men. The design was awarded a silver medal in the 1862 Exhibition
