A VICTORIAN FOUR-PIECE SILVER TEA SERVICE WITH MATCHING COFFEE POT AND PAIR OF SUGAR TONGS
The service maker's mark of John S. Hunt, London, 1857, stamped HUNT & ROSKELL LATE STORR & MORTIMORE; the coffee pot maker's mark W C in oval pellet between, 1850, the tongs, Francis Higgins, 1860
Comprising inverted pear-shaped tea kettle, stand and lamp, teapot, two-handled open, gilt-lined, sugar basin and cream jug, and baluster coffee pot, each pear shaped, chased, engraved and applied with Dutch genré scenes in the style of Teniers, on four scroll supports with toasting peasant join, the coffee pot on grotesque figural supports, base underside engraved with crest and initials C H, the sugar bowl and cream jug with toasting figural handles, the pots with grotesque mask joined, eagle mask-headed, scroll spout, with varying part-foliate applied scroll handle, the hinged raised decorated cover topped by differing figural finial, the kettle on circular stand on three bacchic mask headed, claw and ball footed, multi-scroll support, with elaborate apron between centering female mask--the coffee pot 10¼in. (26.03cm.) high; the tea kettle on stand over swing handle 19in. (48.26cm.) high, gross weight 240oz., all in two-handled, iron- banded oak case, with two-tiered fitted interior lined in green felt, the front with lock (no key) and applied with plaque engraved Dr. W C Hood (6)
