A COLORED AND NEAR COLORLESS DIAMOND "WRAPPED HEART" BROOCH, VERDURA
Designed as a pavé-set yellow to brownish yellow diamond heart, enwrapped by a latticework of single-cut near colorless diamond ribbons and tied with a single and circular-cut near colorless diamond bow, mounted in platinum and gold
Signed by Verdura
Fulco di Verdura changed the look of jewelry. He arrived in New York in 1937 and, after a two year stint with Paul Flato, opened a salon that was immediately successful. Instead of designing in the then current style, utilizing platinum and precious gemstones, he began creating jewelry with colored gemstones in sculptural settings. He also reintroduced figural motifs based on fanciful characters, animals and the marine life. The illustrated heart clip brooch is a variation on his "wrapped heart" theme. On it, he has substituted colored diamonds in place of cabochon rubies for the heart. And, instead of wrapping the diamond-set ribbons in a random manner, he structures them regularly, more like barrel staves or latticework. This heart is also crowned with an elegant bow made from the same diamond studded ribbons.
