For any collector of colored diamonds surely the most prized example to find would be a stone with a primary color grade of red. This is without question the rarest of colors and according to our records this is the largest example of a fancy purplish red diamond to appear at auction. Over the past ten years only two stones have ever been offered with a "red certificate", both by Christie's New York. On April 28th 1987, a 0.95 carat circular diamond sold for $880,000, a record that still stands today, and on October 23 1996, a 0.25 carat oval stone sold for $81,700.
