Pure inventiveness characterizes this necklace by Mary Kruming Douglas. By juxtaposing colored gemstones in different linear configurations with smooth and shiny surfaces, she has created a piece of jewelry that is not only beautiful but also a work of art. Yellow and pink are a favorite color combination for this designer. On this necklace, the linearity of the rectangular-cut pink kunzites is softened by the circular-cut yellow beryls and white diamonds. A garland of yellow beryls is draped over textured undulating bands on which diamond-set ribbons are entwined, terminating in highly polished surrealistic gold claw motifs. On this piece appearances are deceiving and what seems logical is often not the case. Although the kunzites are mounted into traditional settings, gold vines wrapped around the stones give the illusion they are holding the stones in place.
