AN AMUSING DIAMOND, EMERALD AND GOLD CHERUB BROOCH, MARY KRUMING DOUGLAS
Designed as a sculpted matte-finished gold cherub, its head and waist enhanced by circular-cut diamonds, with emerald eyes, holding a circular and marquise-cut diamond flower bouquet in one hand and a circular-cut diamond single flower in the other hand, mounted in platinum and 22K gold
With maker's mark for Mary Kruming Douglas
Total weight of the diamonds approximately 6.50 cts.
Mary Kruming Douglas, like many artists, is inspired by the world around her. While attending an opera in the countryside near Salisbury, she noticed a pair of charming cherubs holding the curtain near the stage. She later reinterpreted these compelling figures into a brooch in which the cherub holds a five-petaled flower in one hand, perhaps a forget-me-not, and a spray of flowers in the other. His body has been carefully finished to accentuate the 'chubbiness' of the figure. This brooch was featured in an article about the designer, Design in Jewels by Doris Reynolds in the March 1966 issue of "Palm Beach Life".
