Lot Essay

Tamborine drums are commonly used by shamans in various parts of the world. This unusual example with the articulated bird carving at the top is most probably Eskimo. In its construction, it compares somewhat to an example from Nelson Island in the collections of the Sheldon Jackson Museum, Sitka (Furst, 1973-4, p. 35).
