Joseph Coteau helped popularize the technique of firing gold paillons between the layers of enamel. A box made by this technique and signed by Coteau is illustrated in Kenneth Snowman, Eighteenth Century Gold Boxes of Europe, London, rev. ed. 1990, pl. 470.
