Lot Essay

Meissen-style decoration such as that found on the present vases was executed at Vincennes as early as 1745. However, as the rims are gilt, the present examples cannot have been made any earlier than 1749 at which time gilding was introduced. See Svend Eriksen and Geoffrey de Bellaigue, Sèvres Porcelain, Vincennes and Sèvres 1740-1800, London, 1987, nos. 29-38 for examples and a discussion of Vincennes porcelain decorated with woodcut flowers on a white ground in the style of Meissen.
