Lot Essay

A commode formerly in the collection of the princes L.M. and E.L. Kotchovbey with matching ormolu frame is illustrated D. Roche, Le Mobilier Français en Russie, Paris, vol. I, pl. XXXII. The quality and richness of the ormolu decoration and the use of the central cartouche are strongly reminiscent of the work of the ébéniste Jacques Dubois, such as a commode illustrated A. Pradère, Les Ebénistes Français de Louis XIV à la Revolution, Paris, 1989, p. 170, fig. 147. Another, illustrated P. Kjellberg, Le Mobilier Français du XIIe Siècle, Paris, 1989, p. 271, has the same angle mounts and sabots.
