Lot Essay

Celso Lagar (1891-1966) was a Spanish painter, printmaker and sculptor. Having studied in Madrid, where he was also an amateur bull-fighter, Lagar arrived in Paris in 1911, and came under the all-pervasive influence of Cézanne's painting. In 1915 he became acquainted with Modigliani, who painted his portrait (see A. Ceroni, I dipinti di Modigliani, Milan, 1970, no. 96).
