This study is related to a series of larger drawings, including a charcoal drawing done on a 60 x 65in. (152.4 x 165cm.) canvas, on the theme of a faun seducing a recumbant nymph with the playing of his aulos, a twin-stemmed reed pipe. The counter-positioning of figures derives directly from the central lunette of La Danse, the mural Matisse executed for the Barnes Foundation, which was completed in 1933.
