Tim Garrard (1982) describes this weight as one of only three published erotic weights from the earliest phase of figurative goldweight production, dating from the seventeenth century. He states: "The bold and powerful forms of these weights, with their disregard for realism and avoidance of fussy detail, are characteristic of Early Period pieces."
