Lot Essay

In Paris from 1958 until 1963 on a scholarship provided by the Free Cultural Association, Maeda Josaku began work on a series of paintings based on Indian mandalas. In 1963, a year after he painted the present work, Maeda had two solo exhibitions in Tokyo at the Gallery Aoki and the Tokyo Gallery and he won the grand prize at the Japan International Art Exhibition. His travels to India, Iran, and Iraq in the early 1970s, a full decade after the Mandala series commenced, confirm his continuing fascination with the richness of design in these countries.

Another painting by Maeda Josaku, Ningen kukan (9), was sold in these Rooms in Contemporary Japanese Art from the Estate of Blanchette H. Rockefeller, lot 47, April 27, 1994.
