PRESIDENT JEFFERSON'S CONTRIBUTION TO A MEMORIAL TO MARTHA WASHINGTON

David Austin (1759-1831), a well-known but highly eccentric clergyman, was famed for his prediction of the Second Coming, which failed to take place as predicted on 15 May 1796. At this date he was promoting the project of a chapel as a memorial for Martha Washington and apparently the new President felt it to be worthy of his contribution.
