MICHAUX, FRANÇOIS ANDRÉ (1770-1855) Botanist, American traveler. Autograph letter signed ("Michaux") to botanist Auguste Broussonet (1761-1807), Paris, "24 Prairial An 4" (12 June 1796). 3 pages, 4to, 252 x 210 mm. (9 15/16 x 8¼ in.), closely written, address panel on page 4. In French. Michaux refers to letters he has received from his father, the naturalist (1746-1802), who is presently deep in the North American wilderness: "During his latest voyage, here is what he said in a letter dated 13 jan. 1794. They [the Quebec fur traders] helped me...travel into the uninhabited interior of the Country. The Quebec merchants who buy furs all the way from the Segancy river to Hudson Bay, found me a canoe with three savages...From the Chicatourne river to the Misstassins lake I have crossed 32 lakes...[I am] very happy with my three savages...[my only] company for the past 9 weeks, I believe I have travelled about 200 leagues north of Quebec...[and have seen] only bears, beavers, and lynx."
