"ROCK-A-BYE BABY"

A fair copy of the famous modern version of this old English lullaby. The original words are believed to have been first published about 1765 in John Newbery's Mother Goose's Melody, and were reprinted at a later date in America by Isaiah Thomas. In about 1872, fifteen-year-old Effie I. Crockett, while babysitting, composed the well-known tune and reworked the old words of the song, changing the first line. Published as a song with piano accompaniment under the pseudonym Effie I. Canning in 1884 by a Boston music publisher, it rapidly became one of the best-known of all children's songs. For details see James J. Fuld, The Book of World Famous Music, pp.468-169. Rare.
