Third edition of Ortelius's world map, dated 1587 under the cartographer's signature. Loose copies seem to have circulated from 1588 on, and the map was first published in the 1592 edition of the Theatrum. For this third plate the cloud border was replaced by a decorative border with classical quotations. Minor geographical improvements include the elimination of the bulge in the southwest coastline of South America, and the first appearance of the Solomon Islands. Shirley 158, and 122, plate 3.
