Lot Essay

With their serpentine crestrail, solid vasiform splat and the spooned out knee, these chairs are similar to a known group made by William Savery. A closely related example is in the The Mabel Brady Garvan Collection illustrated in Patricia Kane 300 Years of American Seating Furniture (New York, 1976):p. 91, fig. 71. Two other related examples are illustrated in Hornor's Blue Book Philadelphia Furniture (Washington, 1935): p. 196 fig. 313 and 314.
