Lot Essay

The watercolour depicts the Grassmarket looking up Victoria Street. The Grassmarket was the main approach from the West to the Old Town of Edinburgh. Before Victoria Street was constructed in the nineteenth century visitors followed the West Bow which zig-zagged steeply up to the Royal Mile. The Grassmarket was also the scene of public hangings in Edinburgh.

A watercolour of the Royal Mile, Edinburgh by Louise Rayner was sold at Christie's, Edinburgh on 28 November 1999 for £26,450.
