Lot Essay

With its thriving port, picturesque architecture and lush surrounding countryside, the coastal town of Kirkcudbright attracted artists from the nineteenth century onwards. Peploe probably first visited the town in 1915, staying with his friends Jessie Marion King and Ernest Archibald Taylor, and returned to paint on several occasions over the next few years.
