Lot Essay

Born in Lancashire, Philipson trained at the Edinburgh College of Art 1936-40. After the war he returned to the college to teach, and from 1960-62 he was Head of the School of Drawing and Painting. Elected a Royal Scottish Academician in 1961, he was President of the Academy in 1973-83. In 1976 he was knighted in recognition of his services to art in Scotland.
