DOMAINE JEAN-MARC BOILLOT
Jean-Marc Boillot's share of the Domaine Sauzet vineyards (his father had married Etienne Sauzet's daughter) forms the basis of this estate, which he set up independently in 1985. His wines are forthright, with up-front fruit characters and well rounded tannins, thanks to carefully judged management of new oak usage. They are easy to appreciate when youthful, but also have potential to improve with bottle-age.
Of the 1996 whites, Puligny-Montrachet Les Referts has yellow-golden colour, with evolved, buttery aromas. The palate reveals more youthfulness than the nose, with characteristic minerality, and natural freshness. Puligny-Montrachet Champ Canet is also relatively evolved in aroma, and with greater richness.
The 1990 reds have lost their youthful purples to glow bright ruby. The aromas show bottle-aged character (undergrowth, spices), while still full of vigour and youth on the palate, albeit that the tannins are becoming more supple. AH
