DOMAINES GEORGES MUGNERET AND MUGNERET-GIBOURG
There are two Domaine labels here, for family inheritance reasons, but the wine-making is identical to both. Since the death of Dr Georges Mugneret in 1988, the estate has been conscientiously directed by his widow and two daughters, one of whom, Marie-Andrée, is a qualified oenologist. Great care is taken to ensure that wine-making technology does not mask the clear distinctions in the wines from different vineyards, which are brilliantly expressed. The family has consigned a superb range from the vintages of the 1990s, in bottles, magnums and Jeroboams, the last two sizes coming in wooden cases.
The 1996 wines in this cellar now show bright, attractive fruitiness, although they are still a little tight. They may be opened and enjoyed, but are certainly still improving. The 1995s are very closed, and may be aged 10 - 15 years without any worries, in good cellarage. Today they seem rather austere, and would benefit from decanting, if opened. 1993s are beginning to open up, showing rich complexity if decanted. No hurry to drink these, nor the magnificent 1990s.
