ORSON WELLES
An original July 1939 contract/agreement between Orson Welles and RKO Radio Pictures, Inc. The sixty two page contract represented a two picture commitment from the studio, but was historic in that for the first time, a studio director would have complete control over all aspects of a film. The Hollywood tabloids were aghast, as noted in an editorial in the "Hollywood Spectator", A genius is a crackpot on a tightrope. Hollywood is watching Orson Welles, wondering if his foot will slip. After two cancelled projects and time running out on his contract, Orson Welles turned to a project with screenwriter Herman Mankiewicz, and Citizen Kane, along with Mr. Welles status as a Hollywood legend was born. The contract features original ink signatures of Orson Welles and RKO president George Schaefer. Together with an additional copy of the contract containing annotations and notes. (2)
