Lot Essay
Warp: wool, light tan, natural, Z2S
Weft: wool, light tan, Z2S, two shoots alternating, one straight, one wavy, some weft-wedging along sides
Pile: wool, Z2, asymmetric knots open to left, 0-20 degrees (small areas) warp depression, H10½xV10, a few small areas of left asymmetric jufti knots over three or four warps
Sides: one bundle of eight body warps wrapped in alternating dark red and green Z4 wool (barber pole striped)
Ends: top: 5/8in. weft-faced plainweave striped in green and dark brown, with red and yellow cord sewn through, warps bunched and knotted
bottom: average ½in. weft faced wool, Z2 plainweave striped as top, green and dark red cord sewn through
Colors: tomato, deep gold, light blue, grass green, dark brown, dark blue, salmon, orange, rose, ivory, blue-green, dark red, black
The carpet offered here was possibly woven by the Kashkuli, one of the tribes which form the Qashqa'i Federation. Another Qashqa'i carpet, albeit with a reverse border/field color scheme, more usual smaller size and less spacious drawing than the offered lot, can be seen in Thompson, Jon, riental Carpets, New York, 1983, p.17.
