A FINELY CARVED CINNABAR LACQUER CIRCULAR BOX AND COVER
QING DYNASTY, 18TH CENTURY

The compressed domed cover is well-carved on the centre with petal panels enclosing floral sprays radiating from an open peony blossom, the rounded sides of the cover and box fluted with narrow petals enclosing further floral motifs, all raised on a ring foot of conforming foliate form, the interior and base lacquered black (restored)

Lot Essay

Compare with two very similar domed boxes with fluted sides, the first in the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, illustrated in Hai-Wai Yi-Chen: Chinese Art in Overseas Collections - Lacquerware, National Palace Museum, Taibei, 1987, pl. 160; and the other in the Tianjin Museum, illustrated in Zhongguo Qiqi Quanji, vol. 6, Qing, 1993, no. 220.
