A FINE AND VERY RARE LARGE CLOISONNE ENAMEL AND GILT-BRONZE BALUSTER VASE
YONGZHENG/QIANLONG PERIOD (1723-1795)

The hexagonal vase is superbly enamelled on each facet with flowers growing from rockwork, including peony with magnolia, narcissus with roses, prunus with nandina and wild orchid, pink and yellow chrysanthemum, begonia with cassia and lotus with hibiscus, the panels framed with archaistic chilong scrolls repeated on the tall neck and on the splayed foot, the shoulder encircled by bats and interrupted by a pair of gilt-bronze chilong handles with brightly enamelled wings and tails

Lot Essay

The composition on each facet of the vase is lavish and exceptionally naturalistic, a feature rarely seen on cloisonné enamel pieces. Compare this lot with a larger vase (74 cm. high) sold in these Rooms, 30 April 1995, lot 596, which is also very naturalistically enamelled.
