QING DYNASTY, 18TH CENTURY

Of flattened double-gourd shape, the circular domed panels each painted with a floral medallion, the blade-like petals enclosing trefoils, radiating from a yinyang roundel surrounded by trigrams, the panels encircled by petal motifs and the sides with ruyi-cloud scrolls, the gourd mouth is decorated with a narrow floral band, repeated on the strap handle

Lot Essay

The present vase was made to emulate the Yongle moonflasks of this design, examples of which are widely published. Cf. one illustrated by J. Ayers, Far Eastern Ceramics in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, 1980, pl. 145; and another by R. Krahl, Chinese Ceramics in the Topkapi Saray Museum, Istanbul, 1986, vol. 2, no. 616.
