Surmounted by a putto holding a flower garland, seated on a winged globe timepiece, on clouds, signed H. Nelson to the right, above the bombé spreading upper-structure, divided into eight compartments, each with a gilt-tooled leather cap, above a pull-out lined with a gilt-tooled burgundy leather writing-surface, the lower section with tambour doors stamped H. NELSON next to the lock plates, the inside fitted with two adjustable shelves, the apron centred to the front by a foliate clasp, on four foliate feet

Lot Essay

Nelson established his business 46, rue de la Madelaine, Paris, in 1856. His son Henri relocated the shop 79, boulevard Haussmann; 2, rue Tronson-du-Coudray; and finally 27, rue Pasquier in 1870. The business continues to this day.
