Lot Essay

This chair with its deeply scrolled back and Vitruvian scroll seatrail corresponds to the George II fashion of the 1730s. These feature on a set attributed to the Clerkenwell maker Giles Grendey (d. 1780) sold by Christie's London, 6 July 2000, lot 57 (£70,000). The attribution of the Christie's set is based on a labelled set with the same patterned backs (illustrated in C. Gilbert, Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture 1700-1840, Leeds, 1996, p.242, fig.435).
