Circa 1850
Each with a rococo-style top section with a central flowerhead and foliate-cast shaft and five scroll branches with C-scroll and rockwork-cast nozzles, the neoclassic lower section with baluster shaft hung with swags with a swagged open tripod base and a canted circular base, fitted for electricity

Lot Essay

The striking early neoclassicism of the bases of these candelabra is inspired by French designs of around 1760, such as a pedestal by Philippe Caffieri supplied to the Cathedral of Notre-Dame in that year. That model is illustrated in S. Eriksen, Early Neo-Classicism in France, London, 1974, fig. 204.
