A REGENCY ROSEWOOD GAMES TABLE
Attributed to Gillows, circa 1820
The rounded rectangular top with chanelled edge and central sliding section with a chequerboard to the underside and a blue leather-lined well fitted as a backgammon board, with a drawer to either side opposed by a false drawer raised on spindle tressle end supports joined by lozenge cornered block with downswept legs leading to scrolled ends carved to imitate brass caps raised on casters, the brass pulls of a later date

Lot Essay

The overall form of this table with Grecian spindle-ends relates to an 1818 pattern in the Estimate Sketch Book of Gillows of London and Lancaster (G. Wills, Craftsmen and Cabinet-Makers of Classic English Furniture, London, 1974, p. 123). A related rosewood table, bearing the stamp of James Winter (retailer) is illustrated in C. Gilbert, Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture 1700-1840, Leeds, 1996, p. 497, fig. 1022.

A games table of this form was sold anonymously, 24 February 1995, lot 123 (£10,925).
