A RARE SMALL OLIVE-BROWN-GLAZED STONEWARE BIRD VESSEL AND COVER
HAN DYNASTY

The compressed body, projecting wings and wide tail of the standing bird carved and impressed with various feather patterns below a narrow grooved band encircling the mouth rim, the domed cover similarly decorated and surmounted by a small stylized head, irregularly covered with a dark olive-brown glaze (some restoration and small chips)

Compare a very similar bird vessel and cover with the feathers represented in a slightly different manner, illustrated in Zhongguo taoci daxi (Chinese Ceramics Series), Han Tang taoci daquan (Han and Tang Ceramics), Taipei, 1987/89, p. 92 and 93

The result of Oxford thermoluminescence test no. 766h95 is consistent with the dating of this lot
