Each finely carved: one depicting two boys, one holding a circular drum at his shoulder, the other holding castanets, wearing loose, belted robes, their hair pulled up in topknots; the second applique carved as two smiling female musicians wearing loose, rippling robes, one holding a cloth-wrapped qin; the third carved in high relief as a bald-headed boy wearing earrings and bracelets squatting as he prepares to catch a large ball; all with traces of pigment and two with traces of gilding

Lot Essay

The applique of the two boys was included in the exhibition, The Minor Arts of China III, Spink & Son Ltd., London, March 31-April 16, 1987, Catalogue, no. 38.
