VERY FINE STRIKE OF THIS EXTRAORDINARILY RARE 'HUMOROUS' FANCY CANCEL

Lot Essay

Note: This recently certified fancy cancellation is not listed in Herst-Zareski/Herst-Sampson or in the recently published 'Cancellations and Killers of the Banknote Era 1870-1894' by James M. Cole. It is a 'companion' cover to another with identical markings and from the same correspondence as one that appeared in the Knapp sale of November 3-8, 1941 (lot 1185). In our opinion the stamp is actually Scott no. 207 rather than no. 158.
