With moulded cornice above a pair of arched panel doors carved with guilloche and blossoming foliage, the bombé lower section with hinged slant front enclosing interior fitted with faux book spine drawers above three frieze drawers and three drawers to either side of an arched kneehole on plinth base (alterations and restorations) --116in. (295cm.) high, 68in. (173cm.) wide, 31in. (79cm.) deep

Lot Essay

A bureau-cabinet of similarly imposing proportions was designed by the Bordelais architect Louis Combes, for the consul of Hamburg in Bordeaux (illustrated in J. du Pasquier, Les Arts Décoratifs Bordelais, 1991, p.137). Another example from the collection of Juan Portela was sold in these Rooms, 27 January 1993, lot 300.
