A PAIR OF ITALIAN NEOCLASSIC WALNUT ARMCHAIRS
LATE 18TH CENTURY

Each with shaped rectangular padded back upholstered in pony skin with central shell-carved cresting on circular tapering stop-fluted legs headed by paterae, one with a paper label indistinctly inscribed ...Signore Comandante...Rafal..Sforza, Genoese (2)

Lot Essay

The indistinct label indicates that these chairs may have a provenance tied to a member of the Sforza's family, a Lombard ducal family equally famous for political intrigues and artistic patronage. The direct male line died out in 1535 and the dukes of Sforza-Casarini are descended from collateral branches of the family.

A similar pair of chairs with caned back and seats were sold in these Rooms, 17 March 1990, lot 70.
