Lot Essay

These chairs with their pierced backs and distinctive interlaced carving relate to a number which are in the Spanish Royal Collection. A suite of seat furniture executed by the court cabinet maker, José Lopez, in 1790-91 with a similar scrolled back yet more neoclassic lines to the legs is in the Salon de los Espejos at Aranjuez, and another two related suites are at the Casita del Labrador, Aranjuez (see L. Feduchi, Colecciones Reales de Espana, El Meuble, 1965, p. 246, fig. 144-145, p. 287, fig. 191 and p. 290-291 figs. 194-195).
