The fashion for combining oriental lacquer with satinwood case pieces enjoyed great popularity in the Netherlands at the end of the 18th century. Mathijs Horrix supplied Princess Wilhelmina with a number of commodes inlaid with oriental lacquer provided by the princess while a sale at the Hague in 1797 included cabinets including one 'à l'Antique' being exceptionally finely inlaid with East Indian lacquer' (see R. Baarsen, Nederlandse Meubelen 1600-1800, 1993, p.128). A similar secrétaire à abattant was sold Christie's London, 19 May 1994, lot 64.
