POSTMASTER GENERAL WILLIAM SOLOMON'S LETTER TO THE POSTMASTER GENERAL AT HALIFAX
1857 (7 January) letter from The Postmaster General of Newfound- land, William Solomon, headed "General Post Office" and addressed to The Postmaster General at Halifax informing him that stamps had been issued and enclosing samples of those that would be affixed to mail passing through Halifax. The seven values, 1p, 4p, 5p, 6p, 6½p, 8p and 1sh unused were affixed to the left margin of the letter; while some of the stamps have faults, all are bright fresh examples of good color and the 1sh has large margins and is absolutely superb. Unquestionably, this important and historical item is one of the gems of Newfoundland philately and one of the great items of British North American philately; outstanding. S.G. 1, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, S.G. Cat. £30,705
