Lot Essay

The prime version of this composition, painted in 1673, before Madame de La Valliére entered a Carmelite convent, was previously in the Cranford collection (see L. Nikolenko, Pierre Mignard, 1982, p. 118, no. 12). Another version with identical dimensions was previously in the Dayton Art Institute, Dayton, Ohio, sold at Christie's, London, Nov. 5, 1982, lot 166.
