Lot Essay

This pair of mirrors compares most closely to a design for a mirror and console by John Linnell reproduced in H. Hayward, 'The Drawings of John Linnell in the Victoria and Albert Museum', F.H.S.J., 1969, fig. 46. Other closely related mirrors were supplied in 1759 by the Edinburgh cabinet-maker William Mathie to the Earl of Dumfires for Dumfries House (F. Bamford, 'A Dictionary of Ediburgh Wrights and Furniture Makers 1660-1840', F.H.S.J., 1983, figs. 14-16).
