Lot Essay

This chair is of the same design as a large suite of seat furniture supplied to the 1st Earl of Harewood and subsequently offered by H.R.H. The Princess Royal and the Earl of Harewood at Christie's London, 28 June 1951, lot 46. The suite was probably made for Harewood House, Hanover Square, in the early 1800s when alterations were carried out for Edward, Lord Lascelles, created Earl of Harewood in 1812. Another pair of this model was sold Christie's London, 18 November 1993, lot 29.

This type of Franco-Grecian chair is linked with the architect Henry Holland and the two cabinet-making firms of Morel & Hughes and Marsh & Tatham. Both firms supplied furniture to George, Prince of Wales, for Carlton House and were fashionable amongst his francophile circle of friends.
