Lot Essay

The pattern for the legs on this table are after a design for a 'Sideboard Table' in Thomas Chippendale's The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director of 1754, pl.XXXVI. A table directly copying the Chippendale design was supplied by the Scottish cabinetmaker Alexander Peter for Dumfries House, Ayrshire in 1759. Peter and Thomas Chippendale were both engaged by the Earl of Dumfries in the furnishing of Dumfries House in the late 1750's and early 1760's (F. Bamford, 'Edinburgh Wrights and Furniture Makers 1660-1840', F.H.S.J., pp.10-12, pl.4A-5). Another table formerly at Colonial Williamsburg, (sold in these Rooms, 17 October 1987, lot 178), shares the same design of the legs.
