Lot Essay

The classical panel is derived from Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Tischbein's Collection of Engravings from Ancient Vases...now in the possession of Sir Wm. Hamilton, which was published between 1791 and 1803. Sir William Hamilton's vase collection was lost in a shipwreck en route to England in 1798, but was recovered thereafter and is now in the British Museum, London.
