Louis Comfort Tiffany was on the board of Tiffany's during the 1890s, and upon his father's death in 1902, became vice-president and artistic director. This box is not marked with Tiffany Studios' mark, but with an M for president John C. Moore, thereby dating this example circa 1907, when the Studios' enamelling department was absorbed by Tiffany & Co. "Louis Comfort Tiffany's Tiffany Studios silver is quite different from Tiffany & Company's regular lines. The pieces were all handmade and tend to be more exotic in their feeling". (Charles H. Carpenter, Jr., Tiffany Silver, 1978, p. 47), All of L. C. Tiffany's early precious metal holloware pieces were enameled and often set with the following gemstones: opals, turquoise, malachite, pearls, jade or garnets. (Janet Zapata The Jewelry and Enamels of Louis Comfort Tiffany, 1993, p. 141). A black and white photograph of this box is in the Louis Comfort Tiffany Photographic Scrapbook (Tiffany & Co. Archives). On the photograph is hand written J 325, and below the photograph is written J325 - Silver box, enamel + opals -. The initial J, indicated the directorship of Julia Munson of that department. Born in New Jersey in 1875, after art school, she began her apprenticeship at the age of 23 under Louis Tiffany in the enamelware department. At 27 she was in charge of the department. Although she is usually associated with the enamelled jewelry, one of the photographic scrapbooks include serveral pages of small holloware assigned with a three digit number preceded by the letter J There are approximately 25 examples in this scrapbook with numbers from 270 to 720, interspersed with similarly marked jewelry items.
