A large pair of Arita blue and white baluster vases and domed covers with mythical beast and drum finials, with later red, gold and black lacquer decoration, the porcelain with designs of foaming waves and scrolling chrysanthemums, flowers and foliage, the lacquer carved in relief with lappet shaped folds of birds including ducks, pheasants and kingfishers among prunus, weeping willow and lotus flowerheads on a cell-pattern ground (some damage) -- 35½in. high, the porcelain late 17th Century, the lacquer probably 19th Century.
