On shaped oval base with dentilled rim with band of flutes with beads and shells between, rising to a stem with fluted flange, the oval vase form body part-fluted and chased with bosses and foliage between with band of guilloche and paterae above, with chased foliate tubular scroll handle and shell form spout with female mask below, the hinged oval cover with shell-form thumbpiece and chased band of foliate scrolls with garlands between, the center chased with rock formation with beaded border and surmounted by a cast dragon, marked near rim 14 3/8in. (36.5cm.) high

Lot Essay

Objects of this impressive scale are rare in Latvian silver. Similar foliate scroll chasing appears on a large tankard by the same maker illustrated in Ehrnrooth et al., Silver Treasures from Livonia, Estonia and Courland, Helsinki, 1991, no. 88.
