A 1p. a.l.s by Spencer Compton, Earl of Northampton, dated Banbury, 28 December, 1642, to Prince Rupert, telling of the routing of Northampton and the few men needed for the task 'The rebels are not yet returned, but lye scattered in the Townes thereabouts by fourety and fiftie in a Company. Soo that if there sold be but three hundred Dragones, with a Regimt. of horse it would not only disperse them, but encourage the Country to rise on his Ma[jes]t[ie]s. behalf agst them...'; and another 1p. a.l.s., dated Banbury, 20th January, 1644, to Prince Rupert, reporting that the enemy '...after they had begun to set Spade in ground' had left the site of their intended new garrison, and assuring the Prince that he will 'Speedily take some course to make that house unfitting for their use'; and seven other unrelated 17th and 18th century documents signed by Thomas, Earl of Danby, Carew Ralegh, Edward Cromwell, Warren Hastings, Thomas Wriothesley, Martin Burrage and the George Downing and George Carpenter.
